They foster a sense of enjoyment\, peace\, security\, health and well-being. More individuals and families are reaching out and interested in learning how to start a garden while others are excited to learn how to compost. And\, for those who are already gardening\, perhaps we can help you “up” your gardening game. \nThe Garden Learning Series features a number of workshops to help and educate on a variety of topics. The first program will cover seed starting for your garden and of course\, we will offer a program dedicated to compost and composting! Workshops will be held the second Wednesday of the month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. A list of upcoming topics and workshops can be found on the SWALCO site. \nThis program series is offered in collaboration with University of Illinois Extension and Master Gardeners via a two-year grant that SWALCO received from USDA. The grant focuses on efforts to promote composting and food waste diversion\, and also hopes to increase the generation and use of compost in commercial\, residential\, agriculture\, and community gardens sectors in Lake County. Registration is free for all\, thanks to the grant.

DESCRIPTION:Chicago River Day 2020 returns to Deerfield on May 9! The response last year was outstanding so this year we’ve added a second location. Register here for the Trinity UCC on North Ave or the Briarwood Park on River Rd location. Preserving and restoring these spaces are critical to a productive ecosystem and storm water mitigation. \nYou will be helping pollinators\, birds and amphibians\, regain a foothold in the woodlands along Deerfield’s section of the north branch of the Chicago River. We have opportunities for people of all abilities to: clean up litter\, plant flowers for a monarch waystation\, plant trees and shrubs\, or remove invasive buckthorn. Please arrive prior to 9:00 a.m. so we can start on time \nRegistration is encouraged so that we can provide enough supplies for each location. Register for the Trinity UCC on North Ave or the Briarwood Park on River Rd location.  \nAs a special thank you\, volunteers receive a Chicago River Day T-shirt! Snacks will be provided\, too! Volunteering brightens our landscape and our community spirit. Grab a friend\, your family or a whole group and join your neighbors who embrace this opportunity. Please wear closed toed shoes\, work clothes that can get dirty\, and bring a full (reusable if possible) water bottle. Families with children over 8 are encouraged to participate. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

DESCRIPTION:Join members of Go Green Deerfield and an Ecologist for an early Spring walk through wooded and partly-wooded trails in Briarwood Park and Trail Park. \nThis walk will showcase Spring “ephemeral” flowering plants like Trillium species\, Jack-in-the-pulpit\, Trout lilies\, Wild Hyacinth\, Wild blue phlox\, and Virginia Bluebells\, which flower and feed bumblebees and other pollinators when few other plants are flowering.  As the heat and dryness of the summer approaches\, these plants fade away\, hence the term “ephemeral”\, or lasting a short time. \nBe prepared for the ever-changing weather\, and make sure you wear water-proof boots. \nThe walk will start at 12:00pm and last for an hour. \nThis event is family friendly!!  Kids reap many benefits to their health and emotional well-being spending time outdoors and experiencing nature.
